News-Journal patriarch, arts patron Tippen Davidson dead at 81

Herbert M. (Tippen) Davidson Jr., 81, president, CEO and co-editor of The News-Journal, the last family owned daily newspaper in Florida, is dead.

The father of the Florida International Festival, founder of Seaside Music Theater, and driving force behind the News-Journal Center died at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 23, 2007, at Halifax Medical Center.

Tippen Davidson, seen here guest-conducting the London Symphony Orchestra pops concert in 2005, was instrumental in bringing the LSO to the area as part of the biennial Florida International Festival. Davidson, who attended the Juilliard School of Music, loved music and was committed to bringing the arts to Volusia and Flagler counties.
